Bronze Chinese Song Period Mirror

(circa 960 - 1127 AD)

The earliest Chinese mirrors date to the Spring Autumn period and the Han Dynasty produced some of the finest mirrors made of white bronze however, mirrors were made during all dynasties and their designs changed accordingly.  This mirror probably dates from around the time of the Song dynasy and is most interesting becasue of the high relief pattern . Although the front of the mirror had a reflecting surface, such mirrors may have been equally prized for their art and designs.

Details

This mirror is interesting because of its high relief motif and the high raised rim around the edge of the back side. Both are seen in Song Period mirrors.
